DANCE PERFORMANCE: AN INDIAN SWAN IN AMSTERDAM

On December 7 at the Muiderpoort Theatre in Amsterdam The Satish Dance Company presents an Indian Swan in Amsterdam. Ten talented dancers involve the audience in an exotic and romantic dance performance based on Tsjaikovski’s famous Swanlake.

It is 1877 and Prince, a young student who studies in Amsterdam, is madly in love with an Indian fellow student. In his fantasy he courts her in the appearance of a swan but to his despair his stepmother involves him with the daughter of a rich man. He doesn’t love her. Because he does not want to disappoint his stepmother he agrees with her choice but when he looks outside his window and sees a couple of swans passing by his mind wanders to his own Indian swan.

Satishkoemar Myre-Makhan has developed choreographies for this performance based around European and Indian music. The company consists of ten dancers who are trained in the Indian Bharata Natyam dance style, a style which distinguishes itself by a combination of power and elegance. Satishkoemar uses this form of dance as the bases for his own modern pieces. Through these the audience experiences the diversity used in current Indian dance.

Satishkoemar Myre-Makhan is an Amsterdam choreographer whose work has been performed in large theatres in the Netherlands such as the Tropentheater and Korzo. Over the past ten years he has developed himself into a multi-faceted choreographer of both classical and contemporary Indian dance.

An Indian Swan in Amsterdam is part of the monthly double programme TANDEM-dans. Beginner theatre makers are given their own space and project their own face into the standard programmes in the Plein and the Muiderpoort Theaters. After the performance the public is invited to a Meet & Greet with the choreographers.

An Indian Swan in Amsterdambegins at 20.30 on December 7, 2012. Muiderpoorttheater, Amsterdam. Entrance fee €11. For reservations (020) 668 13 13. www.muiderpoorttheater.nl

GrachtenFestival Amsterdam 2012

10-09-2012

Grachtenfestival celebrates anniversary with special programme Providing a platform for talented young classical musicians for 15 years This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Grachtenfestival. Dedicated to the theme of love, this year’s festive edition of the annual event will be celebrated with three special anniversary programmes. Talented young musicians will stand centre stage again, continuing the Grachtenfestival’s 15-year tradition as a platform for talent and upholding its seminal role in the cultural landscape of the Dutch capital. Over the years, what began as a three-day festival with 38 programmes has expanded into ten days filled with 230 activities. Unchanged, however, is the quality of the programmes, the intimacy of the performances and the friendly atmosphere for which the festival has been known always.

Platform for young talents

As the Netherlands premieres stage for talented young musicians, the Grachtenfestival gives promising players a chance to expand their artistic boundaries and explore new horizons, in many cases through festival initiatives. It was at the Grachtenfestival, for example, that the Frommermann vocal ensemble had its inception, as did the extraordinary stage debut of Het Hemelse Leven by Ramsey Nasr and the Amsterdam Ensemble, with their thrilling performance of Mahler’s 4th Symphony. The sensational success of these and other initiatives led to additional performances beyond the Grachtenfestival. Another way in which the festival promotes young talents is with the annual Grachtenfestival Conservatorium Concours and awarded with the GrachtenfestivalPrijs.

Special anniversary activities

Young musicians of promise will also be invited to spread their artistic wings in the special programme of activities organized in honour of this anniversary year. Saturday August 11th will see the premiere of ‘Nozze Don Così – The Mozart & Da Ponte trilogy’. On Sunday August 12th, the international mlw Festival Philharmonie’s young members will play a concert on the well-known Dam Square. Last but not least will be an electrifying performance by the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw on Thursday August 16th, with special guests Dr Lonnie Smith and Twogether.

Free open-air concerts

The pontoon docked in front of the Festival Centre at Het Compagnietheater will be returning this year to host a range of concerts, including the official opening of the Grachtenfestival (Friday August 10th, 8:30 p.m.), the Kloveniersconcert with The Gents (Wednesday August 15th, 6 p.m.) and a grand finale in which the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw will be playing the musical score from West Side Story (Sunday August 19th, 5:30 p.m.).

All of these concerts can be attended free of charge. For the full festival programme and ticket purchase, see this link.

Japan Festival 2012

09-06-2012

The Japan Festival this year will be held on 9 and 10 June in Amstelveen. Now the preparations for the 2012 edition of the Japan Festival are in full swing it is hard to imagine that it was a year ago that Japan was hit by a devastating natural disaster. On 11 March 2011, the world could do little more than look on as the lives of tens of thousands of Japanese changed forever. Entire villages were razed to the ground by a merciless tsunami. A special concert in memory of the victims was held in 2011 by the Japan Festival Foundation and attended by members of the Dutch Royal Family. An ensemble from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam performed Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and the Japanese poet Ryoichi Wago recited the poems Kanashimi (sorrow) and Kibou (hope).

The emphasis of 2012 Festival will be on Japanese street scenes. Many stylistic features of the Japanese street will be on view. An eight-metre high traditional torii (gate) will rise up at the entrance to Amstelveen’s central square. In walking through this gate visitors will symbolically cross the border into what will be called ‘Little Japan’. For two days, visitors will be able to enjoy the cultural and culinary offering of this temporary village.

The themes of light and hope will be continued in this year’s Japan Festival. Following a centuries-old Japanese tradition, visitors to the twoday festival will join together to attempt to fold a thousand paper cranes. The thousand birds will be symbolically given to those who are still suffering everyday from the events of 2011.

One of the most recognisable forms of expression in Japanese musical culture are the impressive and spectacular Taiko Drummers. These drummers, with their beautiful traditional instruments will perform on both days of the festival, entrancing the audience at the main stage with their stirring rhythms.

Japan’s rich culinary culture will not remain uncelebrated. The Festival and Hotel Okura Amsterdam, are together organising a national sushi competition, which all the Japanese chefs of the Netherlands may enter. The grand finale will be held during the Japan Festival where the winner will be announced. The estimated 40,000 visitors to the festival will, of course, be able to savour this delicious Japanese speciality at various distribution points throughout the festival.

Japan enjoys world renown in sport. Many Japanese sports are practiced by many Dutch, young and old – karate, judo and kendo to name a few. Demonstrations and workshops for all these sports will also be held. Kendo will receive special attention from the festival organisers, because this year’s European junior championships will held in the Netherlands.

The possibility holding the final on the main stage at the Japan Festival 2012 is being explored. The Japanese festival is open to everyone and so there is plenty of entertainment for children. A famous Japanese car manufacturer has supplied the foundation with two cars covered in transparent film. Japanese children will be asked to paint one car in a way they think Dutch children would. Dutch children will be asked to decorate the other car in a way they think Japanese children would. Both vehicles will be unveiled at the Japanese Festival.Of course, all the programmed events mentioned here are conditional, because the organisation of the festival is still underway. But whatever happens, visitors to the Japan Festival 2012 can look forward to two exciting days, which will embrace all things cultural and culinary, but where there will also be room to pause and remember the awful events of 2011.

Garba & Dandiya Party

01-10-2011

The Garba & Dandiya party that took place on the 1st of October in 't Open Hof, Amstelveen was a a huge success. It was the first time that BTG hosted such an event so we're very proud of the outcome and the supoprt that we recieved from everyone.

A special thanks to the BTG board - Manu Katyal and Rituraj Somani who worked very hard before, during and after the event to make sure all things went smoothly. Thanks to our BTG Team members - Anupriya, Pareeksha, Sinaland Vikram in dedicating their time to get everyone enthusiastic for the event and being on their toes the whole party.
DJ Don was of course absolutely great with his array of music for the party.
BIG thank you to all the volunteers without whom we'd not be able to have the manpower to have a successful party.Harish and Payal Solanki - They put in our their energy to HAND MAKE the dandiya sticks (Red Velvet and Gold ones).
Ankita Anand and Suhk Singh - These two lovely young ladies handled the door registration flawlessly and made sure that no one was left hungry.
Bindiya Jaggan - She helped us transport the wonderful dinner from the Lord Shiva Temple to the location.
City Silks - If you're looking for good Indian clothes to purchase here in Holland this is the place to go! City Silks assisted us prior to the event to make sure we covered all details of the party and also organized for dandiya sticks (the ones with bells on them).
Lord Shiva Temple - BTG has so much to thank them for starting off with the prayers which were done beautifully and gave us the blessings to have a wonderful event. They also provided us with the delicious dinner and also two wonderful helpers to serve the food! Lord Shiva Temple is constantly working hard for the community and we really appreciate their support. They need your support too though so they can continue doing their acitivities so please don't be shy to give your donations via Bank Transfer to: Lord Shiva Hindu Temples| Account Number: 58.037.57.49

Pictures of the event will be online soon but for now enjoy a short write up on Amstelveen Web with a video of the event which is a must see for those who missed out. Click here to see the video of Bridging the Gap Foundation's first Dandiya & Garba party and read up on the review of the party.

Thanks once again for all the wonderful support and hope to see you next time at our next event!
